The Palnure Glen has a long history of woodland and forest management. In recent times it has seen a full rotation of modern forestry, from planting to felling and restocking again, while retaining the character of the mixed woods and pastoral farming of the valley floor, The bird population of Kirroughtree Forest is drawn therefore from a varied range of bird communities with a species list running into three figures.

From its starting point at the Multi Start at Kirroughtree Visitor Centre, The Papy Ha' Bird Trail leads the wildlife enthusiast through the valley floor of Palnure Burn, taking in a wide variety of habitats from streamside meadows, scrub and broadleaved woodland edge through most of the different types of forest rotations to spectacular mountain and coastal views.

The WalkFest route is extended from the waymarked trail to include a visit to the Red Squirrel habitat in the forest. The Red Squirrel programme is an important natural regeneration programme and our behind the scenes visit promises to be a real treat.

Pick up one of the leaflets from the Visitor Centre before you commence this walk. It lists the birdlife you are likely to encounter on your trek.
