 The Three Cairnsmores

+

 Distance: 30km (19 miles)

£ 15

 Ascent: 2200m

Ref 3-1

Route Summary
This is a new challenge completing Cairnsmores of Carsphairn, Dee and Fleet, as three linear walks in one day. A dedicated minibus and driver makes this possible and through the permissions of landowners much of walking on roads can be reduced but it is still a huge day and only for those who are accustomed to long walks and capable of 2500 metres of ascent. The adventure starts by climbing Cairnsmore of Carspahairn from Knockgray desending to Moorbrock. The second ascent Cairnsmore of Dee is from the A712 over some rough ground for 3km to a forest road leading to Clatteringshaws Visitor Centre where refreshments are available. The final Cairnsmore attack point is further along the A712 at the Red Deer Range where another forest road gives access to Millfore, Meikle Multaggart and the last haul to the top of Cairnsmore of Fleet. An easy 6km descent on the path leads to the finish at the car park.

 Mullwarchar and the Dungeons

 Distance: 18km (11 miles)

£ 10

 Ascent: 1250m

Ref 3-2

Route Summary
This combines the Buchan and Dungeon ridges with the bonus of Mullwharchar as an example of true wild pathless Galloway, but the views into the desolation of the eastern flank of the Merrick make the effort worthwhile. The circular route starts at Loch Trool with a steep climb to the top of Buchan Hill, along the ridge past the Grey Man to Loch Enoch and another steep climb to Mullwharchar. A short descent to Pulskaig Burn, another climb to Dungeon Hill, past the Nick of the Dungeon and the last top Craignaw is approached over the Deil's Boolin Green. The descent is by a ridge that goes to Mid Burn where a path leads past Loch Valley and down the Gairland Burn to the forest road back to Loch Trool.

 Merrick from Shalloch Farm

 Distance: 20km (12.5 miles)

£ 10

 Ascent: 1250m

Ref 3-3

Route Summary
This is yet another approach to access the Awfu Hand Range and culminate in climbing the Merrick. The start is at the David Bell Memorial at Rowantree Toll then along the road to the derelict Shalloch farm with a feeling of openness in the wide valley. By contrast the next section goes through the forest alongside the tumbling Shalloch Burn then a forest ride leads to a 2km leg up the steep westerly slope of Shalloch on Minnoch from where the views to the Arran hills and beyond are quite stunning. The route now turns southerly over Tarfessock, a mild scramble up Kirriereoch and the final climb up the Little Spear to the second Corbett of the day, the Merrick. The final 6km follow the normal path back to Loch Trool.

We have added on a new section to a walk that has been popular in previous Walkfests to make a longer and more interesting linear route. The start follows the road to Innerwell Fishery following the coastal path southerly past Eggerness to the delightful village of Garlieston. The route then goes through the gardens of Galloway House along the coast to Cruggleton Castle and a short section through fields to be picked up on the main road. The constant views of sea and the background of distant hills make a superb coastal walk quite special.
