Autumn walkers encouraged to return in the
spring
Outdoor enthusiasts who have enjoyed the variety
of walking opportunities and beautiful autumn
colours of the Galloway Hills over the half
term holiday period are being encouraged to
return to the region in the spring for Newton
Stewart Walking Festival.
The event, which will be held on Friday 12
May to Sunday 14 May 2006 includes 17 guided
and self led walks over three days as well as
a programme of evening social events.
Chairman of the Festival Committee, Dr Bob
Simpson said: "Next year's Newton Stewart Walking
Festival will offer an unprecedented variety
of walking opportunities. Our committee of local
enthusiasts know the terrain, history and best
routes to ensure that visitors and locals have
a weekend of walking to remember. We are very
fortunate in this area to have on our doorstep
the Southern Upland Way, Scotland's coast to
coast long distance foot path, as well as Galloway
Forest Park. Through our close working relationship
with the Galloway Mountain Rescue Team we are
able to offer expert guides for our more challenging
walks whilst Forestry Commission Scotland's
involvement allows us to make use of their excellent
facilities throughout the Forest Park. "
Bill Mitchell of the Festival Committee added:
"Newton Stewart is the gateway to the great
walking region of the Galloway Hills. The town's
three day festival includes walks for all abilities,
from short woodland and town trails to challenging
high level ridge walks, ascents of some of the
South of Scotland's highest hills and explorations
of our beautiful coastline. We also plan a number
of themed walks to take advantage of the variety
of landscape, wildlife and history found within
the locality. We hope that everyone who has
enjoyed walking the Galloway Hills this autumn,
whether they be local residents or visitors,
will join us again in the spring to see the
region in a completely different light."
Details of all the planned walks can be found
on the walking festival website at www.newtonstewartwalkfest.co.uk
or look out for information in local tourist
information centres and other outlets in the
new year. Online booking for all events and
a complete weekend planner will be available
on the festival website from January 2006 but
